The Simpsons family is heading to theaters … again.
The official Instagram account for 20th Century Studios announced the “Simpsons Movie” sequel on Monday, Sept. 29, with a photo of Homer’s arm grabbing a donut with the number two written all over it.
“Homer’s coming back for seconds,” the image read.
The caption noted that the sequel will hit theaters on July 23, 2027, two decades after “The Simpsons Movie” premiered.
“The Simpsons” previously predicted that 20 years would go by between films. In the first episode released after the “Simpsons Movie” premiere, titled “He Loves to Fly and He D’ohs,” Bart’s opening credits chalkboard message read, “I will not wait 20 years to make another movie.”
The joke was fitting at the time considering “The Simpsons” was on the air for nearly 20 years before the first film’s release. The animated sitcom premiered in 1989, and the movie debuted in 2007.
No plot details have been revealed for the “Simpsons Movie” sequel just yet. During the first film, the town of Springfield was confined under a massive glass dome due to Homer’s inadvertent pollution of the town lake.

Season 37 of “The Simpsons” premiered on Sunday, Sept. 28. The long-running animated series stars Dan Castellaneta (Homer), Julie Kavner (Marge), Nancy Cartwright (Bart), and Yeardley Smith (Lisa).
During The Simpsons’ season 36 finale, a flash-forward revealed that Marge was dead. However, since the episode was set in the distant future, Marge was alive and well during the season 37 premiere.
Fox renewed “The Simpsons” through season 40 in April, simultaneously renewing “Bob’s Burgers,” “American Dad,” and “Family Guy” for four more seasons each.
“We are so proud that these legendary shows will continue for hundreds of more episodes, allowing new and longstanding fans to watch, rewatch, and experience more of ‘The Simpsons’, ‘Family Guy’, ‘American Dad,’ and ‘Bob’s Burgers’ for years to come,” Marci Proietto, the head of 20th Television Animation, said in a statement at the time.
“The Simpsons” airs on Fox on Sundays at 8 p.m. ET. Episodes are available to stream on Hulu the day after they air.
