Another part of the legendary Turner family has unfortunately been lost. Ike Turner Jr., son of Ike Turner and Tina Turner, recently died at 67 years old.
Afida Turner, who is married to Turner’s half-brother Ronnie, revealed the news in an Instagram post. “REST IN PEACE IKE JR,” she wrote over the weekend. “U WAS AMAZING BROTHER IN LAW I M GLAD I SPEAK WITH U ON A PHONE BEFORE U GONE LOVE U RIP.” VIBE has reached out to Afida Turner for further comment.
Tina Turner’s niece, Jacqueline Bullock, also spoke with a few publications to confirm his passing and cause of death. “It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of my cousin, Ike Turner, Jr.,” she told Page Six in a statement. “‘Junior’ was more than a cousin to me, but rather a brother, as we grew up in the same famed household together.”
Bullock described how he was interested in all instruments, beginning with the drums, but soon transitioned to the keys. “Eventually, Junior would end up helping to run Bolic Sound Studios, the recording studios founded by his father, Ike Turner,” she added. “While he faced the same challenges that many of us have, he would become a sought after sound engineer, musician, and Grammy winner for Best Traditional Blues Album in 2007 for his father’s Risin’ With The Blues.”
Bullock expressed her gratitude for the condolences that she and her family received, and requested that people respect their privacy. In her conversation with TMZ, Bullock spoke about his health issues and when exactly he passed away. She said he experienced several setbacks over the years, including heart issues and a stroke this past month. Ultimately, it was kidney failure that caused his untimely demise this past Saturday (Oct. 4).
Turner Jr. was originally born in 1958 to Ike and his ex-girlfriend Lorraine Taylor before later being adopted by Tina Turner. When Ike and Tina split, Turner Jr. worked as his adopted mother’s sound engineer for some time before his father intervened and ended that collaborative relationship. His Grammy victory with his father was special because it was Ike’s final album before he died 10 months later. VIBE sends its sincerest condolences to the Turner family, friends, loved ones, and fans.
