In Her Album, Taylor Swift Hinted at Her Engagement to Travis Kelce Before He Even Proposed

Taylor Swift has told us herself that she is a mastermind, and her 12th studio album, The Life of a Showgirl, is further proof.

In several of her tracks—like “Elizabeth Taylor,” “Opalite,” “Honey,” “Wood,” and “Eldest Daughter”—the record-breaking singer swoons about her relationship with fiancé Travis Kelce, and makes more than a few confident nods to their long future together ahead. In different lyrics, she references an engagement ring, an upcoming wedding, and even children.

“All the right guys promised they’d stay,” she sings in “Elizabeth Taylor,” adding, “If you ever leave me high and dry, I’d cry my eyes… like Elizabeth Taylor / Tell me for real, do you think it’s forever?” In the track, she also references the saying “diamonds are forever,” and pleads: “Don’t you ever end up anything but mine.”

“Opalite” seems to have been inspired by Kelce’s birthstone, the opal, and in the song, Swift sings about how the skies are no longer dark, but rather have an opal rainbow glow now that he is in her life. In “Honey,” she similarly talks about how whenever people referred to her as honey or sweetheart before, they didn’t mean it as a compliment, but Kelce does. “You can call me honey if you want because I’m the one you want,” she sings. “You give it different meaning because you mean it when you talk.”

She then adds, pointing to their future together, “I’m home, we can play house,” and adds, “What’s the plan? / You can be my forever night stand.”

The NFL star proposed to Swift hours after she appeared on his New Heights podcast in August to announce the release of The Life of a Showgirl. By then, the album had long been completed, as the singer disclosed that she wrote it during her Eras Tour. So all this time, she had to have known Kelce would be her endgame.

In “Eldest Daughter,” Swift explains how being her parents’ first child, with a younger brother to guide, has made her a people-pleaser, but also endlessly loyal to those she loves. “When you found me, I said I was busy, that was lie / I have been afflicted by a terminal uniqueness / I’ve been dying just from trying to seem cool / But I’m not a bad bitch and this isn’t savage / but I’m never gonna let you down, I’m never gonna leave you,“ she sings promising to be faithful.

She even makes a nod to her future wedding vows, singing, “So many traitors, smooth operators / but I’m never gonna break that vow, I’m never gonna leave you now.” And then there is the lyric that seals the deal: “When I said I don’t believe in marriage, that was a lie.”

But “Wood” might be the most romantic and steamy of her new songs. A love-struck Swift sings that while she used to be superstitious, Kelce broke the “curse” some evil magic being had put on her, and she now feels so sure about their love that she “ain’t got to knock on wood” to know they’ll be okay.

“Seems to me that you and me we make our own luck,” she sings. “It’s you and me forever, dancing in the dark.”

Not only does she reference their sex life (“love was the key that opened my thighs”) but she also makes it clear she is ready to marry him. Swift sings, “I don’t need to catch the bouquet to know a hard rock is on the way.”

Swift’s biggest reveal, though, came not in all the marriage references, but in the song “Wish List,” in which she admits that all she wants it to build a life and raise a family with her husband-to-be. She sings, “Have a couple kids, got the whole block looking like you / We tell the world to leave us the fuck alone and they do / Got me dreaming ’bout a driveway with a basketball hoop.”

The ultimate romantic finally got her love story.
