Indian music icon dead at 52 after scuba diving incident

A popular Indian musician has died after suffering medical emergency during a scuba diving trip. He was 52.

Zubeen Garg, known best for his 2006 Bollywood hit “Ya Ali,” died in Singapore Friday, according to North East India Festival. Garg was set to perform at the festival one the weekend.

“This is a monumental loss, and words cannot express the depth of our grief,” festival organizers said in an Instagram post.

Singapore police rescued Garg from the ocean after sustaining injuries while diving and rushed to the hospital, where he ultimately succumbed to injuries.

Garg’s cause of death was revealed to be drowning, according to Himanta Biswa Sarma, chief minister of Garg’s home state, Assam.

The musician was regarded as an Indian cultural icon for his work. During his career, which spanned over 30 years, Garg sang in dozens of languages and dialects, solidifying himself as a power in the Assamese, Bengali and Hindi-language entertainment industries.

His biggest hit, “Ya Ali,’ was featured in the Bollywood film ”Gangster” (2006).

Rahul Gandhi, a member of the Indian National Congress, took to social media to share a tribute to Garg.

“His voice defined a generation, and his talent was truly unmatched. He overcame personal tragedies to reshape the landscape of Assamese music. His perseverance and courage have left an enduring mark,” Gandhi wrote in a an X post. “He will live on in our hearts and minds forever.”
