It’s nearly time for Deborah and Ava to hang up their jokes for good: Hacks is coming to an end.
On the red carpet for the 77th Emmy Awards in Los Angeles, Hacks star Hannah Einbinder casually told E! host Heather McMahan that work begins on Hacks season 5 “next week,” and that it will be the last for the hit HBO Max comedy. “We’re going to start next week, and knowing it’s the last season is really bittersweet,” Einbinder said. “But I think it’s right, you know? It’s nice to do something as many times as it should be done. Not overstay your welcome. Rip it and do it and laugh and cry.”
This shouldn’t be a surprise to Hacks fans. Creators Jen Statsky, Lucia Aniello, and Paul W. Downs have previously mentioned to the press that Hacks was pitched to then-named WarnerMedia as a five-season show. “We pitched five seasons. Even in the pitch of the whole series, we pitched the very last scene, the finale,” Aniello told Fast Company in May.
In a different interview with Variety, also published in May, Downs said there still might be wiggle room for more after season 5. “We’ve been allowed to do the amount of episodes every season that the story demands,” Downs said. “So when we get together, as much as we’ve had a master plan, there’s an episode in Season 3 where Deborah gets an honorary degree from her alma mater. That was something we thought about Season 1, and it ended up being something that, based on how we mapped it out, happened in Season 3.
He continued, “We are now breaking up Season 5, and we have to see how many episodes it will take us to get to where we know we’re going to go. The final scene of the final episode has been in our minds since 2015, and we’re excited to get there. But that may take more episodes than we can fit in the season. So the truth is that we don’t know. The truth is that we’ve been really lucky to be able to tell the story in the way that the writing requires, and we’re gonna do that again. And so if we can’t get to that final chapter in 10, and it might be more — we just don’t know. That’s the truth. We know where we’re going, we just don’t know how long it will take to get there.”
Based on Einbinder’s comments on the red carpet, it seems that Hacks‘ creators have solved the story and will stick to the upcoming fifth season as the final bow for the show.
At tonight’s ceremony, Jean Smart won her fifth Emmy Award (and her fourth for Hacks) for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series. However, her co-star Einbinder also received an Emmy, her first ever, winning Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for Hacks. In her speech, Einbinder joked that she was resigned to never win. “But this is cool too,” she quipped.
