If you too excitedly jumped after the announcement of a Grand Theft Auto film in development, then you, my innocent fans – in Joey’s lingo (a FRIENDS reference) – have been “bamboozled.” Because this is not happening. For those unversed, here’s the tea:
Last night, a post claiming a GTA film was reportedly in the works with major studio Paramount quickly went viral. So much so that, at the time of writing, the post has nearly 1.2 million views. But just so you know, this is not happening, at least not in this universe for some time.
Actually, DiscussingFish is a parody film account that has repeatedly posted such fake news stories. For example, it claimed, “First Look at ‘THE BATMAN: THE DCU CUT’” and whatnot, and then linked the post to some random article from reputed news outlets to project authenticity. And that’s how the fake story of the GTA film story came into being.
Interestingly, the hoopla for a GTA film continued the next day as well, with DiscussingFish taking a jab at the delayed GTA 6. The post read: “GTA 6 has been pushed back up to August 20th, 2026. Rockstar Games says, “All of our Developers literally will not see their families once until next Christmas.”
As for any near possibility of a GTA 6 film, we had a crystal clear answer last year. Rockstar Games’ co-founder made it clear that a GTA movie “never made sense.” He said, “We had what we considered to be multi-billion dollar IP, and the economics never made sense. The risk never made sense. In those days, the perception was that games made poor-quality movies,” he explained (via IGN).”
