‘It wasn’t received like we wanted’

Gypsy-Rose Blanchard is apologizing for making light of her mother’s murder.

Earlier this week, Blanchard sparked outrage after participating in a TikTok trend, that saw her crack a joke about the 2015 killing of her mother, Dee Dee Blanchard, for which she was charged with second-degree murder. She may have taken the joke too far, Gypsy-Rose acknowledged in an interview with TMZ Monday.

“I understand that my audience has always followed my journey because they like to see me grow,” she told the outlet in the interview published on March 23. “Usually, I think I can bank on my audience receiving things very well, but I’m not the type of person to be very in-your-face about my past.”

She added, “This is the first time that I tried something different in a head-on approach. Unfortunately, it wasn’t received like we wanted.”

Gypsy-Rose teamed up with influencer Natalie Reynolds for the Friday “We listen, and we don’t judge” video, which involves quipping about dark secrets. At one point, Reynolds admitted to offering a homeless woman who couldn’t swim $20 to jump in a lake.

Gypsy-Rose replied, “We listen, and we don’t judge. I went to prison for eight-and-a-half years, because I…” she paused to make a choking noise and formed an “X” with her arms, “…my own mom.”

“Oh my god,” Reynolds responded, to which Gypsy-Rose repeated, “Hey, we listen, and we don’t judge.”

Other revelations included Gypsy-Rose confessing to wearing wigs and Reynolds admitting she faked a pregnancy to keep an ex from breaking up with her.

Speaking to TMZ about the video, Gypsy-Rose added, “The whole idea behind it is like, you know, yes, we understand that we’re not perfect. We are influencers, and we have gone through some difficult things, but we are focusing on positivity. That was the entire point of the video: is accountability and growth.”

In 2016, Gypsy-Rose pleaded guilty to second-degree murder for her role in her mother’s 2015 death. Her then-boyfriend, Nicholas Godejohn, fatally stabbed Dee Dee at her Springfield, Mo., home. Following their arrests, it was revealed that Dee Dee had Munchausen syndrome by proxy and had abused Gypsy-Rose for years by lying about her daughter having a host of serious medical conditions that led to real medical procedures, despite Gypsy-Rose actually being physically healthy.

Godejohn was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life without the possibility of parole while Gypsy-Rose was convicted of second-degree murder and sentenced to 10 years in prison. She was released from prison in December 2023, roughly two years early.
