In case you needed some feel-good content this week, Jake Gyllenhaal recently shared a sweet moment with “Adolescence” star Owen Cooper and, fortunately for us, it’s all on tape.
For context, Cooper, who is only 15, is a big fan of the “Presumed Innocent” actor. During a Sept. 12 appearance on “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” he discussed prepping for the 2025 Emmys after receiving his first nomination, and how he was hoping to sit near Gyllenhaal at the star-studded ceremony.
“Is he who you’re looking forward to meeting?” Kimmel asked, to which the British teen responded, “Yeah, he’s my number one.”
That said, on Saturday, Sept. 13, Netflix seemingly arranged for the two to meet, much to Cooper’s surprise.
The streaming platform shared a video to X (formerly Twitter) that showed Cooper doing a mock interview in a hotel room while Gyllenhaal is seen walking down the hall to the room.
“Who are you most excited to meet tomorrow?” an interviewer asks Cooper, who answers, “I think everyone knows that Jake Gyllenhaal is my top number one.”
When asked what he’d say if he met Gyllenhaal, Cooper responded, “I don’t know, I’ll stare at him. I don’t really know.”
Then, at that moment, Gyllenhaal comes into the room and surprises him. “Oh my God,” says Cooper, covering his face with his hands in excitement.
The two shared a big hug and then Gyllenhaal, who also started out as a child actor, presented Cooper with a gift.
“I have a present for you. I made this movie, and I got nominated for an Academy Award,” he said, referring to his Oscar nomination for “Brokeback Mountain” back in 2006. “A friend of mine sent me this before. Something just like this. It’s just a lucky duck to keep in your pocket. To give you a little bit of luck.”
Cooper unwraps the gold duck, which Gyllenhaal had engraved for him. “Thank you. That means a lot,” he said.
On Sunday, hours before the Emmys, Cooper shared some photos of their meeting to Instagram, writing: “Honour and a privilege to meet an icon of the game like Jake and will never forget it @jakegyllenhaal.”
Gyllenhaal commented, “The honor was mine man. Good luck tonight!!!!”
It seems that the lucky duck was indeed lucky, as Cooper later took home the Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie, making history as the youngest actor to ever receive it.
“Adolescence” continued to dominate the night, winning eight out of its 13 nominations.
