While talking to the YouTuber Emergency Awesome, James Gunn confirmed that the DCU is currently without a Batman. In his talk with the popular YouTuber, the DC Studios Co-Chair has revealed that there is no lead actor for Batman: The Brave and the Bold. Although many have assumed that Robert Pattinson would be the one to take up the role, James Gunn has once again put the rumor to rest. Either way, Gunn also admitted that the film is almost completely different than the one he was originally pitched. The only thing that has remained consistent is the controversial director, Andy Muschietti.
There have been many actors to take on the role of Batman throughout the years. Like with Superman, many have attempted to step into the cowl, and not all have been well-received. That said, DC fans have gotten several breathtaking live-action Batmen over the years, including: Adam West, Michael Keaton, Christian Bale, and Robert Pattinson. Each actor brought something different to the character, and all of them were ultimately well-received. Ben Affleck also notably tried his hand at the role, and while he was the perfect Bruce Wayne, many considered his take on Batman to be slightly out of character. That said, the mistake was mostly in the film’s poor writing rather than his overall delivery.
Another incredibly important thing to consider when casting the Caped Crusader is the capable voice cast that has embodied him over the years. Many DC fans consider Kevin Conroy the quintessential voice of Batman. He voiced the character in a number of Animated films and series and has one of the best takes on the character to exist. That said, the actor tragically passed away in 2022. Many other voice actors have provided their take on the character before and after his passing, but no one has come close to his rendition of the Dark Knight. That said, Jason O’Mara, Rino Romano, Troy Baker, and Will Arnett all had amazing performances as the titular character.
Many fans absolutely cannot wait for this film as it will be Batman’s official debut in the overall DCU. Nevertheless, several fans remain skeptical about the film’s director, Batman: The Brave and the Bold. Andy Muschietti is set to direct the upcoming film, which isn’t without controversy. Andy famously directed The Flash, which many consider to have been the final nail in the coffin for Zack Snyder’s overall DCEU. However, Muschietti also directed the IT films, which are both critically acclaimed. Since Batman is closer in tone to IT, Muschietti will probably do a better job directing the Caped Crusader than the Scarlet Speedster.
All in all, even though no Batman has been cast for Batman: The Brave and the Bold, all eyes are on the project. James Gunn has admitted that there have been a tremendous number of changes to the film, but none of those have included an official casting. That said, James Gunn likely understands the importance of the role and will save it for someone truly deserving of the character.
