Now that James Gunn’s Superman is available on digital platforms, you’ve probably watched the film once or twice, depending on your love for the Man of Steel. If you, too, reached the climax wondering about the fate of The Engineer, you’re not alone. James Gunn’s commentary track on the 4K UHD release has got you covered.
To recap, the events of Superman concluded with Man of Steel successfully battling Lex Luthor and his henchmen, The Ultraman and The Engineer. While The Ultraman, a clone of Superman, was sucked into a Black Hole, María Gabriela de Faría’s Angela Spica, aka The Engineer, crashed into Metropolis Meteors’ baseball stadium, and her fate was left uncertain.
“[Superman knocked] The Engineer unconscious,” Gunn confirmed in the commentary track. “She’s out of the movie. Where does she go? Well, you’re going to find that out in the next movie.”
As it turns out, The Engineer will join Lex (Nicholas Hoult), who is destined to team up with Superman to fight greater threats in the not-a-direct-sequel film Man of Tomorrow. Wondering who that might be? As a lot of rumours have it, it could be the cybernetic villain Brainiac. While there is no official confirmation yet, the speculation is fueled by an Instagram post by Gunn featuring the now-completed scripts of Man of Tomorrow with an anatomical cross-section of a head on the front page.
Man of Tomorrow premieres in theaters on July 9, 2027.
