James Gunn recently discussed Superman’s status with the Justice Gang and addressed box office claims about the DCU’s first film. In a new Threads exchange, he explained why Superman remains independent despite close ties to the team and dismissed reports about the movie’s profitability threshold.
James Gunn hints Superman won’t be comfortable in Justice Gang
Responding to a fan on Threads, James Gunn said, “Well I think there could be a few reasons but, first off, you’d have to ask how comfortable Superman would be in a team financed by one of the world’s biggest corporations – a team that also promotes that corporation.” He added, “Yeah he is like a team member. But he’s an independent guy our Clark.”
The exchange began when a fan noted that Hawkgirl claimed Superman was not on the team because Guy Gardner did not want him to have a vote. The user asked Gunn if it would be “out of character” for Superman to join such a group. Gunn suggested the corporate backing of the Justice Gang could affect Superman’s willingness to officially align with them.
Another user pointed out that Superman effectively functions as part of the team even without membership. He fights alongside them, shares his identity, and receives their help. Gunn acknowledged this but emphasized Superman’s independence.
In a separate conversation on Threads, Gunn dismissed claims that Superman needed to earn $650 million at the box office to be considered a success. He wrote, “Absolutely false. Anyone saying that doesn’t have an understanding of the film business – and we would be idiots to make a first-in-a-franchise film that would need to make that much to be profitable.”
Earlier reports suggested $500 million was the threshold for Warner Bros. Discovery to consider the film profitable.
