James McAvoy was allegedly “punched by a stranger in a bar during a night out” whilst promoting his new film in Canada.

James, 46, was said to be enjoying a night out with his wife, Lisa Liberati, in Toronto on Monday when the incident occurred. At approximately 11:55pm local time, the Narnia star was supposedly hit while trying to defuse a heated situation at Charlotte’s Room.

The incident occurred as film stars from across the globe headed to Canada for the Toronto Film Festival, with James being one of them.

“James was having a casual get-together with the producers of his movie and, as he later learned when speaking with the staff, there was a man who drank too much who was getting escorted out,” a source told People. “James’s back was to him, and the man just punched him.”

However, despite being hit, James apparently laughed off the situation and stayed at the bar with his colleagues. He is also believed to have not been injured in the incident.

The 46-year-old Scotsman was in the city to promote his new film, California Schemin’. The movie is his directorial debut, and premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival on Saturday.

The new flick, which is based on a true story, follows two Scots – Gavin Bain and Billy Boyd – who trick music label bosses into signing them a record deal by posing as Eminem’s protégés from America.

With the name, Silibil N’ Brains, the pair went on to party with Madonna, appear on MTV, and even tour with D12, a collective made up of rap legends.

The cast features lesser-known, but ultra-talented actors such as Samuel Bottomley and Amber Anderson. According to the US Sun, the movie is based on Gavin Bain’s memoir California Schemin’, which was later reprinted as Straight Outta Scotland.

James has spoken out previously about wanting to tell Scottish stories, giving voices to people who “have fewer opportunities.”

“I was interested in telling a story not just solely set in Scotland, but about people from backgrounds where they have fewer opportunities, whether that’s council estates or whatever,” he told an audience at Glasgow’s Barrowland Ballroom.

He continued by saying he was passionate about “telling a story that was entertaining and aspirational, and not just dwelling on the grime and dirt, which is part of that sort of lower economic background, definitely.”

A release date for California Schemin’ has not yet been announced.
