YouTuber Jan Zimmermann has died at age 27.
In an Instagram post confirming his death, Zimmermann’s family members shared that he died “suddenly and unexpectedly” from an epileptic seizure on November 18.
“There [are] no words to describe the pain we are feeling, but we would like to thank you for your condolences,” his family wrote in a statement, translated to English. “We currently don’t feel able to say more about this. Please beware of any further messages in this regard.”
The message continued, “His humor, his honesty and his big heart were gifts he shared with everyone. He gave courage to people who’ve never met him personally and showed them that even on difficult days, you can walk through life with love and openness. Forever loved, forever forgotten, we let you go, but never gone.”
Alongside the statement, the family shared a black-and-white photo of Zimmermann smiling at the camera.
Several users took to the comments section to share their condolences, including the official YouTube Instagram account, which wrote, “Our heartfelt condolences, we will miss Jan. ❤️.”
“No word can change anything, but rest assured: Jan and you are in our thoughts! Wish you lots of strength and to you Jan, have a safe journey wherever you are now. 🤍,” another user wrote, while a third added, “My condolences, his content accompanied my difficult time as a teenager at home. He always put a smile on my face — I wish you an incredible amount of strength and peace 🕊️.”
Zimmermann was found dead in his apartment on November 18, police reportedly told German newspaper Bild. An autopsy determined that there was “no evidence of foul play.”
Zimmermann rose to online fame as one-half of the YouTube channel Gewitter im Kopf, which had more than 2 million subscribers. Through their channel, Zimmermann and friend Tim Lehmann shared videos about living with Tourette syndrome.

Zimmermann shared his last post via Instagram on November 17, one day before he died. Lehmann starred in the clip with him, with the caption reading, “Best friend is usually right.”
More than two years before his death, Zimmermann shared his decision to step back from creating content on YouTube. (He later returned.)
“Hey there dear ones, with a crying but also a smiling eye, I said goodbye earlier this month in our last video together. I already mentioned that I’m quitting YouTube or. I have also stopped in the meantime,” he wrote via Instagram in 2023.

He continued, “I want to thank all of you for the interest and support I have experienced during my time as a YouTuber. Because of that, in the last four years, unbelievably many different things and especially travel have become possible. I also had the opportunity to meet many interesting and good-hearted people. All this wouldn’t have been possible without our loyal audience and the wonderful management at our hands. 🙌🏼❤️.”
Zimmermann noted that it was “time to go a different route” for the time being, noting that the decision “wasn’t really easy,” but he felt “relieved.”
“With the successful outcome of my deep brain stimulation last September, the symptoms of Tourette’s syndrome could be minimized and thus more things became possible from a professional point of view. 🔌🧠,” he wrote. “That’s exactly what I use now too. And so the chapter ‘Storm in the head’ finally comes to an end for me. I will remember the past few years though, with all the ups and downs.”
Zimmermann shared that Lehmann would continue to “stay active on social media” and manage their channel.
“Thanks for [a] wonderful time,” he concluded, “do a good thing🙌🏼💯💙.”
