Mako Komuro, formerly Princess Mako of Akishino, is a Japanese art historian and former member of the Japanese Imperial Family. According to Imperial Household Law, if a royal wants to marry a commoner, they have to give up all royal titles and are not allowed to live inside imperial quarters with their families. In May 2017, it was announced that Princess Mako was expected to marry Kei Komuro, a commoner she met while studying at International Christian University. They fell in love, and he proposed to her in December 2013. The wedding was postponed after media reports of financial controversy involving Kei’s mother. They held a press conference on October 26, 2021, lasting ten minutes, expressing their love and seeking understanding. They submitted their marriage documents at the local ward office on the same day. Amid controversy regarding her marriage, she also refused to take the Japanese government’s taxpayer-funded payment of $1.3 million given to royal women upon leaving the imperial family. She moved to her own residence in Shibuya district in Tokyo while awaiting a US visa; the couple departed for the US in November. Kei joined a law firm in New York as a law clerk, and Mako started working as an art historian. They welcomed their first child in May 2025, and they now lead a quiet life in the USA.
