The Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) has announced that restrictions on firearms at entertainment venues will soon be implemented as part of efforts to enhance public safety, following a shooting incident at a post-Carnival event in St Andrew.
The incident occurred on Sunday at the Ranny Williams Entertainment Centre during the Big Wall party, where three people were shot.
According to the police, at 9:30 p.m., a physical altercation developed between patrons at the event.
The dispute reportedly escalated, leading to an exchange of gunfire between two individuals.
The JCF said when the shooting subsided, three persons – two of whom were involved in the altercation – were found suffering from gunshot wounds.
They were transported to hospital for treatment.
The police said one of the injured was later treated and released into police custody, while two others remain hospitalised.
Further, the police say they seized two firearms in connection with the incident.
Another man has since been taken into custody, but his identity is being withheld pending further investigations.
The probe is being led by the Half-Way Tree Criminal Investigation Branch.
In response to the incident, the JCF said it is arranging a series of meetings with party and event promoters to reinforce security and safety requirements tied to the issuing of permits.
As part of these measures, the police say restrictions on firearms at entertainment venues will be introduced, signalling a tightening of regulations aimed at preventing similar incidents.
The JCF emphasised that the move forms part of a broader strategy to improve public safety at large gatherings, particularly during major entertainment events.
