HGTV star Jen Hatmaker has opened up about how she discovered her husband Brandon Hatmaker was cheating on her.
She revealed that at 2:30 a.m. on July 11, 2020, she woke up to hear her husband of 26 years whispering while on the phone to another woman.
She heard him saying, “I just can’t quit you,” as he fell asleep, smelling of alcohol.
Writing in her new memoir, Awake, she detailed how the shocking revelation was “the end of my life as I [knew] it.”
The mother-of-five and bestselling Christian author and influencer had millions of followers and readers who were totally invested in her seemingly wholesome life with her pastor husband.
The pair had founded the evangelical Austin New Church, in Texas, together in 2008. Talking to The celebrity.land about the discovery Jen said, “To some degree, I almost disassociated. It was so outside the realm of what I would have ever considered a possibility for our life, our marriage, our story.”
Jen then spent the following four hours searching her husband’s computer to find the “trail of betrayal.”
Her book doesn’t share too many details of what she discovered, other than to confirm that the affair had been going on for a “devastating time span” and that Brandon had spoiled his girlfriend with “expensive and lavish gifts,” which had plunged her family into “financial chaos.”
She waited for Brandon to wakeup the next morning, and proceeded to throw him out of their house.
She said, “It was so shocking and stunning, and I almost could not process it. I couldn’t even cry.”

The aftermath of what had happened caused her to suffer from depression and anxiety for months as she continued to parent her five children.
The events hit during the Covid-19 pandemic leaving her feeling isolated and not knowing how to manage her own finances even.
“I did not know if I was ever going to be happy again,” she said.
Having grown up in Kansas as the oldest of four children, her own father was a progressive Southern Baptist minister.
She shared, “Inside of that culture, the men are the leaders. They are the pastors. They are the leaders of the family, of the marriage. They are the spiritual authorities. And the women are essentially the support staff.”
She had married Brandon, when she was just 19 years old.
