Jennifer Aniston didn’t just walk away from Friends with lifelong friendships and a legendary acting career, she also fell for one of her costars so hard she ended up adopting him. Yep, The Morning Show star recently revealed on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert that her journey into dog mom life actually started right on the Friends set.
While chatting with Colbert on the September 10 episode, Aniston, 56, couldn’t help but gush about her two current pups—Lord Chesterfield and Clyde, both rescues—before sharing the sweet backstory behind her very first dog, Norman.
“My first dog actually was Norman, whose name is tattooed on my foot,” she said. “Normie, I actually got from the show, Friends.”
According to Aniston, Norman made a cameo in an early episode of the beloved hit sitcom.
“Norman was on an episode of Friends, the one where Joey and Chandler babysit Ross’s baby,” she explained, referencing the season two episode where the guys accidentally leave baby Ben on a city bus. “They’re running through New York City trying to find the bus, and as they’re running—you know how New York has those dog walkers with, like, 20 dogs? Norman was one of those dogs.”
At the time, Aniston had already been thinking about getting a dog, so she asked the on-set animal trainers if they knew of any pups looking for a home. Turns out, Norman was retiring early.
“They said, ‘Well, we actually do have a dog who we’re going to retire because he’s very stubborn and never hits his mark,’” she recalled. “So I retired him. And he became mine. He was only one.”
While Norman passed in 2011, Aniston still keeps him close—literally—with a tattoo on her foot in his honor.
