Dreamgirls fans are reeling about Jennifer Holliday’s recent appearance on The Jennifer Hudson Show.
Both women played Effie White, with Holliday portraying the role first on Broadway, earning her a Grammy and Tony. Hudson won an Oscar for her performance in the film adaptation. Together, they performed the hit, “And I Am Telling You (I’m Not Going)” on the daytime talk show.
Of the reunion and heartwarming moment, the EGOT winner tweeted, “This was a DREAM. To stand beside the legend herself, Ms. Jennifer Holliday, and sing the song that started it all for both of us !!! Oh, I’m gon carry this one with me forever ! Thank you, @LadyJHOLLIDAY— you are EVERYTHING!”
In her sit-down with Hudson, Holliday spoke about the legacy of the gut-wrenching ballad and the character, Effie, amid news of the Dreamgirls Broadway revival.
“They’re talking about the Fall of 2026, which will be the 45th anniversary of ‘Dreamgirls,’ and I would say for a future Effie that you have to find a place in your mind and your center to keep Effie fresh. So, how do you do that?” said Holliday. She noted that it’s much deeper than singing a “trick” and gaining applause. “Every night can be different because you can feel every night. You have to feel it. Let it do that, but then after Effie is done, take Effie off.”
Holliday urged the next generation of performers to “enjoy your newfound success, enjoy whatever could come, but also make sure that you get to shine in your own home [and] on your own self. So, that you know that you’re worthy and you don’t have to suffer Effie’s fate.”
The casting process for the new Dreamgirls is currently underway, but here are VIBE’s top picks for the cast.
