Jennifer Hudson has opened up about how her “musical” son has helped bring out the artist in her. She shares 16-year-old David Daniel Otunga Jr. with her ex-fiancé, former WWE star David Otunga, whom she split from in November 2017.

At the 30th ABFF Honors on February 16 in Los Angeles, Jennifer Hudson spoke to PEOPLE about her upcoming tour and how she is finding inspiration at home. She revealed that both her son, David, and her boyfriend, Common, have been very inspiring when it comes to music-making.
Hudson told the outlet, “My son is also a producer, and he’s been recreating some of my songs, so I’m inspired by that.” She continued, “And then of course, the man Common, being around them both, they are so musical. It’s inspired me in so many unique ways. So that’s bringing out my artistry.”
The EGOT winner also teased that fans might get to hear new music during her tour. “My voice is a tree of many branches. I am a music lover, as well as a singer [and] artist, so it’s going to display all of that, right? So yes, you may hear new material,” she said.
In November 2025, Hudson shared a few videos of herself and her son in the studio on Instagram. The first video clip captured the proud mother gently coaching David on a few riffs, and then he was off on his own. The next clip showed David listening to the recorded track as he bopped his head along with it.
One of the clips also showed Hudson having some fun with David in between takes. In the caption, the songstress reflected on the precious moments as a mother when she created music with her son. She wrote, “The best part of singing is singing with my son. He said mama let’s record one of my fav songs together.”
