Jennifer Hudson was treated to the best early Mother’s Day present.
On Thursday, May 7, the singer was surprised by her son David, 16, on an episode of The Jennifer Hudson Show. One of her producers told her that they had a surprise for her, which led to David walking on stage.
“David!” Hudson says, getting emotional. She gives her teenage son a big hug before the two sit down together.
“Y’all, this is my baby. Y’all got me again,” says Hudson through tears. “Okay, what were you saying, David?”

“Thank you! Give me a hug,” says Hudson. “He said he was coming here today, and I’m like, ‘David ain’t got here.’ And then to hear you come out here, you done baked the cake.”
“My mother always made this pound cake,” the singer explains. “And our family tradition, so for Mother’s Day, birthdays, all special occasions. He always makes it for me. Thank you, baby.”

Last August, Hudson spoke with PEOPLE and gave an update on her son David. At the time, she shared that he was already almost grown into a man.
“Little David is into basketball and music actually. And he’s super tall,” said the proud mom. “People are like, ‘Who that man Jennifer with?’ And I’m like, ‘Y’all, that’s my son.’ That’s how much he has grown. He’s going into his junior year of high school.”
