Jennifer Lawrence at 78th Annual Cannes Film Festival ''Die My Love'' In Cannes, France

The 73rd San Sebastian International Film Festival lit up on Friday night as Jennifer Lawrence was honored with the prestigious Donostia Award, becoming the youngest performer in the festival’s history to receive the career achievement recognition. At just 35, the Oscar-winning actress joined the ranks of past luminaries while also using her platform to issue a powerful warning about the state of free expression in the United States. Jennifer Lawrence, who already holds an Academy Award and multiple Golden Globes, was celebrated not just for her acclaimed performances but for the profound impact her body of work has had on audiences worldwide.

Festival organizers noted that her films, from “The Hunger Games” to “Silver Linings Playbook,” have left a lasting mark on an entire generation of moviegoers. “It’s a huge honor,” Jennifer Lawrence told reporters at a pre-ceremony press conference. “To be here among such incredible artists is truly overwhelming.”

The actress didn’t stop at thanking the festival. Lawrence turned her attention to what she sees as growing cultural restrictions in her home country. “Our freedom of speech is under attack in the United States,” she said, emphasizing how this extends to film and storytelling. “In cinema, we realize that we are all connected and need empathy and freedom. Without those, we can’t tell the stories that matter.”

Her remarks drew attention from fans, with many praising her for using this moment to speak out about the ongoing political debate and recent events.

“Keep speaking the Truth,” one user said on Instagram as another wrote, “Protect her at all cost! International treasure right there.”

A third commented, “Jennifer Lawrence, well said and done.”

Someone else chimed in, predicting, “Now Trump will write on Twitter that he hates her and wants her thrown from the USA.”

In addition to accepting her award, Jennifer Lawrence premiered her latest project, “Kill Me Love,” which she not only stars in but also produced. The film, which has been described as a pivotal turning point in her career, highlights Lawrence’s evolution from A-list actress to multi-faceted filmmaker. She encouraged young creatives to keep fighting for their place in the industry. “Learn, go to casting tests, keep trying. But above all, watching films is very important,” the actress said.

When asked about the state of female representation in the industry, Jennifer Lawrence was quick to spotlight trailblazing directors like Greta Gerwig. “Creators like Greta Gerwig have shown that when we are given the opportunity, the world benefits,” she said. “More stories are told, and there are more perspectives. That’s what makes cinema thrive.”

Her comments come as Hollywood continues to reckon with long-standing issues of gender inequality, even as women-led films like “Barbie” and “Past Lives” dominate the cultural landscape.

Lawrence’s warning about freedom of speech being “under attack” comes at a moment when the entertainment world is embroiled in its own debate over expression. Earlier this month, ABC briefly pulled “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” after the late-night host’s monologue sparked backlash. Kimmel had taken aim at the political fallout surrounding the fatal shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, saying American politics had “hit some new lows” as “the MAGA gang” scrambled to distance themselves from the accused killer while still trying to score points.

The suspension, which ran from September 17 to September 23, ignited fierce arguments over censorship and political pressure in media. When Disney reinstated the show, Jimmy Kimmel’s return episode drew an estimated 6.26 million viewers, triple the usual audience, while his monologue clip amassed more than 22 million views on YouTube within days.

After more than a week of mounting debate, both Sinclair and Nexstar announced on September 26 that they would resume airing “Jimmy Kimmel Live!,” effectively ending the blackout.

“Our objective throughout this process has been to ensure that programming remains accurate and engaging for the widest possible audience,” Sinclair said in a statement. “We take seriously our responsibility as local broadcasters to provide programming that serves the interests of our communities, while also honoring our obligations to air national network programming.”

Nextar chimed in: “As a local broadcaster, Nexstar remains committed to protecting the First Amendment while producing and airing local and national news that is fact-based and unbiased and, above all, broadcasting content that is in the best interest of the communities we serve.”
