There’s a reason the saying goes, when one door closes, another door opens. For Jennifer Lopez, the end of her marriage to Ben Affleck had the air of a renewal, but above all, an air of change.
On CBS News‘ Sunday Morning program that aired on September 28, the artist reflected on her recent divorce, opening up about it as she rarely has before. “It was the best thing that ever happened to me,” she said. “It helped me grow in a way that I needed to grow, and become more self aware.”
Of course, Bennifer’s romance is a tale we’re all familiar with: They fell in love in 2002, planned to marry two years later, but suddenly called off their engagement, citing too much media pressure. Twenty years later, the former lovebirds reunited, as if in a twist of fate. This time, they married in 2022… but ended up separating in 2024.
“I’m a different person today than I was a year and a half ago,” the “On the Floor” singer said, adding that it was on the set of her next film, Kiss of the Spider Woman, that she found the best therapy of all. The environment served as a refuge during all the stages—good and bad—of her separation.
“Every moment on set, and every moment I was doing that role, I was so happy, and then back home it was not great,” she said. “It was like the best and the worst of times, in a way.”
Jennifer Lopez said she had to learn to live with the emptiness and to tame her solitude to make it her ally, so that it became as gentle as possible.
“This summer was probably the best summer I’ve ever had,” she said with a smile of her healing journey. “I’ve had so much fun. I’m able to enjoy things more… I don’t put that pressure on myself anymore,” she said. “I’ve realized that joy is in living and these moments and really embracing life and everything that it brings to you.”
