Jennifer Lopez learned her “limits” the hard way in the early 2000s.
“When I was doing Enough, I think I had done, like, four movies in a row, and I had recorded my second album or something like that,” Lopez, 56, recalled during a Monday, June 15, episode of the “SmartLess” podcast.
While trying to balance music and acting, she recalled filming all day long and then going to the recording studio at night. Weekends were no break to Lopez either. ‘On the weekends, I had junkets or video shoots or whatever,” she explained. “And I remember not clocking that I had worked like 98 days in a row without taking a day off.”
The actress revealed that after “98 days” of working in a row “without taking a day off,” her exhaustion caught up with her while on set of the 2002 thriller.
“Every time I walk to the set, I start getting a little pitter-patter in my heart; it’s like rising,” she shared. “Finally, it got to the point I was like, ‘I really feel nervous.’”
She then told her costar Tessa Allen that she was feeling “a little weird” and went back to her trailer to sit down.
“All of a sudden, I just couldn’t see,” she shared, noting she went to the hospital. “It was almost like I couldn’t see clearly, like something just went over my eyes, and I couldn’t move.”
She continued, “I said to the doctor, ‘Am I going crazy?’ And he said, ‘No. You’re not crazy.’” The singer added that she felt “paralyzed” in that moment, but the medical staff told her that her body had actually “shut down” from being so exhausted.
Elsewhere in the podcast, Lopez opened up about realizing her “anonymity was gone” when a fan approached her and she initially thought she was getting mugged.
“I think in my mind, I thought, ‘You can’t get that back. That’s something that lasts forever,’” she shared. “And I remember that’s when I started having panic attacks.”
“That was getting used to fame and realizing your life had changed in a way you couldn’t control anymore. You can’t go back.”
Lopez first rose to fame in 1997 following her breakout performance in Selena, for which she earned a Golden Globe. Lopez then dove into her music career, but has continued to appear on the big screen, most recently starring in Office Romance alongside Brett Goldstein.
