While on the Graham Norton show, Jeremy Allen White elaborated more about his upcoming Star Wars role. The famed actor finally confirmed that his upcoming character in The Mandalorian and Grogu is directly related to Jabba the Hutt. When shown a picture of the classic Star Wars figure, White humorously stated, “That’s Dad!” confirming once and for all that he is playing Jabba’s son, Rotta the Hutt. Interestingly, this won’t be Rotta’s first appearance in the Star Wars mythos, as he made a notable appearance in the Star Wars: The Clone Wars pilot.
Jeremy Allen White initially rose to fame from his performance as “Lip” in the hit sitcom Shameless. Since the show ended, he has acted in a plethora of other incredible projects, including The Iron Claw, The Bear, and upcoming titles Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere and Frenemies. However, White isn’t the only Shameless star to land a significant Disney role. Cameron Monaghan, who played Ian Gallagher, has been the main star of the Star Wars: Jedi video game series.
As of now, it remains unclear how large a role Rotta the Hutt will have in the film. He only had a brief appearance in the trailer, but Jeremy Allen White’s consistent discussion of the character implies he might serve a larger role. As of now, it appears as though Rotta will either participate or run a massive combat coliseum. Either way, this current position is almost completely different than his animated debut.
Rotta the Hutt serves as a pivotal plot point in the pilot of Star Wars: The Clone Wars. In the series, Rotta the Hutt is kidnapped by the Separatists, who attempt to frame the Jedi and secure good relations with the Hutts. Anakin Skywalker and his new Padawan, Ahsoka Tano, saved the Huttling and brought him back to his father. At the end of the day, neither party secured a good relationship with the Hutts, but it apparently set the stage for the Huttling to have more appearances in the future.
Overall, Jeremy Allen White has officially confirmed his relationship to a classic Star Wars character. His upcoming role, Rotta the Hutt, is the same Rotta who appears in Star Wars: The Clone Wars. While this isn’t the first time the character has appeared in media, The Mandalorianand Grogu will likely be going a completely different direction with the previously depicted Huttling. After all, Rotta is no longer a Huttling. Nevertheless, this does somewhat complicate the timeline since Huttlings are supposed to take upwards of 70 years to reach young adulthood.
