Jim Ward Dead at 66: Fairly OddParents Voice Actor Battled Alzheimer’s

Nickelodeon voice actor Jim Ward has died. He was 66.

Ward died on Wednesday, December 10, following complications from advanced Alzheimer’s disease, the actor’s wife, Janice Ward, told TMZ on Thursday, December 11.

Jim voiced many characters on popular animated shows, including The Fairly OddParents, Ratchet & Clank, Resident Evil 4, Spider-Man vs. The Kingpin and more. (Jim notably portrayed Doug Dimmadome and Chet Ubetcha on Fairly OddParents, as well as Qwark on Ratchet & Clank.)

Jim also cohosted Stephanie Miller’s eponymous radio show.

“One of the saddest messages I have ever received from the amazing Mrs Jim Ward,” Miller wrote via X on Wednesday. “‘Our wonderful voice deity as Steph anointed Jim Ward, passed away today at 10:45AM. Can you let Steph know? Thanks, Janice.’”

She continued, “Our good friend, Jim Ward, passed away yesterday. We’re going to spend the morning remembering his brilliance.”

Several of Miller’s social media followers expressed their condolences in the comments section.

“I’m so sorry for your loss,” an X user replied. “Mr. Ward was an important part of my childhood as the voice of Captain Qwark. I wish the family the very best.”

Jim, who retired in 2021 amid his battle with Alzheimer’s, had previously been candid about getting his big break.

“What first turned me on to that whole thing was, well, I got a tape recorder for my 13th birthday,” Jim said in a 2016 interview. “That was right when Copycats came out and all the impressionists in that. [I was like], ‘Hey, I can do that.’”

Out of his lengthy list of credits, Jim particularly enjoyed working on 1998’s Secret Files of the Spy Dogs.

“We were all playing dogs, and I was sitting between a bat and a monkey,” he recalled. I was literally between Micky Dolen and Adam West.”

While appearing on James Arnold Taylor’s podcast, fellow voice star Larry Morgan called Jim’s work an “art form” in itself.

“It’s beautiful to watch Jim Ward in the studio doing Captain Qwark. It’s a dance [and] he does these wonderful things,” Morgan said. “We can all do our ‘Jim doing’ [voice] but it’s not Jim.”

Jim, meanwhile, explained that voice acting is a blend of audio and physical acting.

“You have to, sort of, take on the physicality of the character,” he said at the time.

In the hours since his death, many of Jim’s fans have shared emotional tributes via social media.

“The voice of some of the most quotable characters in Fairly Oddparents is gone. RIP Jim Ward,” one fan wrote via X, as another added, “Another great legend of 90kids.”

A third replied, “I grew up with Jim Ward on my TV screen playing one of the greatest video games ever, Ratchet & Clank. Rest in peace, Captain Qwark.”

Others noted that they’d never forget Jim’s contributions to animated programs they watched as children.

“Jim Ward brought so much character and passion into the cartoons he took part of,” a social media user remembered. “He will forever be missed, and he’ll always be remembered by those he made smile.”

Another recalled, “Jim Ward’s myriad voices and impressions made every day start out with joy and laughter.”

Others were saddened to learn that two beloved Nick voice actors had died within a week, referring to Jimmy Neutron’s Jeff Garcia. Garcia also died on Wednesday following a brain aneurysm and stroke. He was 50.
