Following the success of Superman and Peacemaker, as well as hype for upcoming projects like Lanterns, Clayface, and Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, a new DC Studios TV show has been announced, and it’s a direct Superman spin-off starring Skyler Gisondo as Superman’s pal, Jimmy Olsen, reprising his role from the movie, which earned over $616 million worldwide, making it the top comic book adaptation of the year.

According to Deadline, DC Crime will present itself as a “true crime investigation” series hosted by Jimmy Olsen, with Season 1 following his quest to learn the truth about Gorilla Grodd, a fan-favorite hyper-intelligent ape who often comes into conflict with The Flash. Tony Yacenda and Dan Perrault are leading the show behind-the-scenes, and they’re no stranger to the “fake true crime documentary” genre, having created Netflix’s American Vandal.
I loved both seasons of American Vandal, and I’m thrilled to see the DCU get something of a spiritual successor to that series. Given that DC Crime is only just being announced, it’ll probably be at least a year or two before we get to actually see the series come to fruition. In a movie full of breakout characters, Jimmy Olsen was a particular standout in 2025’s Superman, so I’m excited to see him take center stage as the lead/host of his own show. I’m also keen on the idea of using an in-universe documentary to explain the origins of characters like Gorilla Grodd.
The DCU is still young, but it already feels more interconnected than the MCU or old DCEU were at the same point in their life cycles. The general rule of thumb for these things is for each project to be capable of standing alone on their own merits while also adding up to a greater whole for fans interested in the wider universe. If you ask me, the DCU has been successful so far. Superman is one of my favorite movies of the year, and both Creature Commandos and Peacemaker are masterpieces in their own way. I’m all in on whatever James Gunn and DC Studios has in store for us, and DC Crime looks like it has the potential to be a fun show that will strive to feel unique within the ever-expanding DC Universe.
