With a new show, a new baby and a new marriage, John Mulaney also has a new tour in 2025. The “Mister Whatever” tour, running from Sept. 2025 to April 2026, gives a whole slew of new material on fatherhood and where Mulaney is at in his life now.
It has been a tumultuous decade so far for Mulaney. Between his highly publicized love life, multiple trips to rehab and production of numerous shows and specials, it has been a whirlwind, to say the least.
“Mister Whatever” marks his first tour since the summer of 2022, when he performed the “From Scratch” tour. This previous tour and its material was worked into his fifth standup special “Baby J,” which was released on Netflix in April 2023. The latest tour is likely to be worked into a sixth special in the coming years, but nothing is officially announced yet.
The Houston stop of Mulaney’s tour took place in the Smart Financial Centre in Sugar Land. Two lesser known up-and-coming comedians opened for Mulaney: Mandal and Andrea Jin.
Mandal, a comedian based in Atlanta, Georgia, had a lot of great material where he compared Houston to other cities. One such memorable joke talks about how bad Shreveport, Louisiana, is when he heard two people chatting about being hit by buses. This marks Mandal’s second time working with Mulaney, as he previously opened for Mulaney’s Netflix show “Everybody’s in LA.”
Mulaney’s second opener was Andrea Jin, an up-and-coming comedian whose set featured witty observations and contemplations on living with her Chinese immigrant grandparents, and the abilities — and assets — of her nighttime partners. This isn’t exactly Jin’s first time working with Mulaney, as she had the chance to perform at the “Netflix is a Joke” festival headed by him. Jin also cited Mulaney as one of her biggest influences.
The main event featuring our eponymous Mister Whatever was, much like his last few years, another wild ride. The fresh, yet classic material took the audience on a journey of all his recent life events.
As Mulaney stepped out on stage, not a single hand went unclapped. The excitement was palpable as the main man took the stage. He looked a bit reminiscent of a Disney villain decked out in a slimming black three-piece suit.
The comedian’s set took the audience everywhere, ranging from the decline in quality of drying machines to commentary on his new life with wife Olivia Munn’s Vietnamese-Chinese family. Despite Mulaney’s radical new life changes, he still kept the energy present from previous shows. His late nights with two energetic young kids or overbearing in-laws will keep down his natural energy.
At the end of his set, Mulaney was able to tie jokes back in from the previous hour into a guide on what to do with your devil-possessed family member and his eccentric bus driver Randy.
As Mulaney took his bows, the crowd was filled with smiling faces and loud cheers. Once the lights came up, attendees chattered with glee and could be heard praising the show as they meandered towards the exits. The consensus seems to be that the comedian has gone five for five on his standup sets in the past decade.
John Mulaney will perform in the Mahalia Jackson Theater in New Orleans on Feb. 20th, 2026. You can purchase tickets to the show on his website.
