John Travolta explained the inspiration behind his viral beret look at the Cannes Film Festival on Friday.
The 72‑year‑old actor turned heads as he hit the red carpet for the premiere of his directorial debut, “Propeller One‑Way Night Coach.”
He rocked a cream‑colored wool beret and a pair of spectacles as he walked the red carpet with his 26‑year‑old daughter, Ella Bleu Travolta. He completed the look with a black suit layered over a knit vest, a white shirt and tie and even added a pocket square and patent‑leather loafers to finish the ensemble.
Speaking with “TODAY” on Monday, the actor explained that he wanted to fully embody the role of a director.
“I said, ‘Well, I’m not an actor this time — I’m a director. Show up like a director.'”
“I have over 50 years of me at events and happenings and I can’t tell the difference with what I wore, look, ‘What year is that? What movie is that?'” he continued. “I said, ‘You know what? I’m making a directorial debut and if you look up on the internet ‘directors and berets,’ every era for 100 years has directors wearing berets.”
Travolta said in an interview with celebrity.land that he looked up pictures of directors from the 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s and 60s to get his style inspiration.
“I thought that’s what I am doing. I am going to do an homage to being a director, he said on Monday. “So then when I look back, I’ll know, ‘Oh that was ‘Propeller One-Way Night Coach,'” that was Cannes when I won the Palme d’Or. And I will have vividness of it.”
Travolta was presented with the honorary award by festival artistic director Thierry Frémaux before the premiere of his new film.
Travolta, who wrote, directed, and co‑produced “Propeller One‑Way Night Coach,” based on his 1997 children’s novel, said the prestigious recognition was unexpected and “beyond the Oscar.”
