John Wayne and Rat Pack star Sammy Davis Jr were not just contemporaries in the entertainment industry, but also lifelong friends.
Their bond was evident through numerous accounts of Wayne‘s remarkable kindness towards the singer.
In 1962, Davis starred in the remake of Gunga Din, titled Sergeant 3, alongside his fellow Rat Pack members Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Peter Lawford, and Joey Bishop.
Davis remembered, “When there was finally a role calling for a Negro cowboy, John Wayne gave me the hat he’d worn in Stagecoach for luck in playing it. He said, ‘I didn’t let my kids touch this Stetson. It’s very dear to me. But I guess you’ll be able to find a home for it.’ I’m proud to have had his friendship.”
In a letter expressing his gratitude, Davis wrote, “Sergeants 3 is now finished and I must, very reluctantly, return your hat. It is a little hard to express in words my appreciation for your kindness, but I think you have some idea of how I feel. Any success I may have in the picture will be mainly due to your generosity. This all may sound a little maudlin, but as I said before, my sentiments are a little difficult to express. If I can ever do anything for you – a benefit for your favorite charity, a walk-on in one of your films, lend you my tuxedo, etc – you know you can count on me,” reports the Express.
However, this wasn’t the only instance where Wayne demonstrated his generous nature towards his friend.
The John Wayne estate recalls a powerful moment of friendship between “Duke” and Sammy Davis Jr. in 1962. While on tour for Hatari!, Duke and his son Patrick attended Sammy’s performance in Windsor, Ontario.
When hecklers disrupted the show, Duke didn’t hesitate to walk onto the stage, throw his arm around Sammy, and instantly change the atmosphere. The audience rallied behind them, and Sammy delivered an unforgettable performance.
As Patrick Wayne later remembered, his father embodied his values, demonstrating true friendship, courage, and character with one simple act.
