New Brunswick’s own Jon Mckiel is about to loop back into our lives. The sample-based singer-songwriter is set to follow up 2024’s Hex this September with new album Gold Horatio.
Mckiel once again worked on this music with composer, engineer, and multi-instrumentalist Jay Crocker, aka JOYFULTALK, but from the sounds of lead single “Rosemary,” it’s not merely more of the same. The track is bigger and bolder than what came before, perhaps because this time Mckiel and Crocker collaborated in person at each other’s home studios after Crocker moved to New Brunswick from his previous home base of Nova Scotia.
“Rosemary” strikes me as the kind of mirage-like indie-synth gem I might have discovered on a blog 15-20 years ago, but Mckiel’s playfully ripping guitar work sets it apart. Listen below.
