It’s been a tumultuous time for late-night talk show hosts. First, Stephen Colbert’s show, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert was unceremoniously cancelled by CBS. The network claimed this cancellation was due to financial considerations, but the timing also lined up with some comments Colbert made that CBS probably did not like much. Following that, Jimmy Kimmel was taken off the air in an absolutely unprecedented move by ABC/Disney in response to his criticism of right-wing groups and their behaviors. But one late-night host who survives to critique another day is Jon Stewart. In the face of this chaos, Paramount has signed Jon Stewart for another year of hosting The Daily Show on Comedy Central.

It is true that, unlike Colbert and Kimmel, Jon Stewart only hosts The Daily Show once per week. Jon Stewart runs the show on Monday nights. On Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, the “news team” of Ronny Chieng, Josh Johnson, Jordan Klepper, Michael Kosta, Desi Lydic, Troy Iwata, and Grace Kuhlenschmidt take over. And it’s possible that this model is indeed cheaper and more functional.
Ari Pearce, head of Comedy Central, noted, “Jon Stewart continues to elevate the genre he created. His return is an ongoing commitment to the incisive comedy and sharp commentary that define Daily Show. The renewal is a win for audiences, for Comedy Central and for all our programming partners. We’re proud to support Jon and the extraordinary news team.” With this renewal, Jon Stewart will continue to host The Daily Show until December 2026.
Jon Stewart joined his peers in criticizing ABC’s decision to pull Jimmy Kimmel and touting the importance of free speech on The Daily Show. Although, notably, Jon Stewart took a parodic approach. So perhaps those being lambasted simply did not know it was happening.
In any case, we feel happy that Jon Stewart has been renewed for another year on The Daily show. Late-night talk shows are a critical part of bringing critique and satire to mass audiences, and we need them now more than ever.
