Even though Michael Mann’s Miami Vice couldn’t make a significant impact upon its release in 2006, the movie has certainly gained a cult following over the years. So, it didn’t come as a shock when Universal Pictures announced that a Miami Vice remake is in the works with Joseph Kosinski set to direct. Since the announcement, there has been considerable curiosity among fans about the actors playing the lead role.
Many fans have been sharing their casting choices on social media, and two names that appear on nearly everyone’s list are Austin Butler and Michael B. Jordan. Fans have made it clear that they want the aforementioned actors to headline the remake, and it seems Kosinski is seriously considering bringing their star power to reimagine the iconic duo.
While speaking at the Hamilton Behind the Camera Awards (via Variety), the 51-year-old filmmaker opened up about the upcoming film and how he’d feel very “lucky” if Michael and Austin came on board. Kosinski said, “Michael is someone I’ve admired for a long time, [and] always wanted to work with him. Austin, I think, is proving himself as someone to watch. Again, I’ve just have really admired his choices. If it ends up being those two, I’d be very lucky.”
His comments come a few weeks after it was reported that Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler were in talks to join the remake. As per Deadline, the Elvis star and the Creed actor were in negotiations to play the roles of James Crockett and Ricardo Tubbs. Although there has been no official confirmation about their involvement in the project, fans and Kosinski would love to see the young superstars play the iconic duo.
The original Miami Vice film featured Colin Farrell as Crockett, while Jamie Foxx portrayed Tubbs. The 2006 movie received polarizing reviews from critics and audiences alike, and despite a production budget of $135 million, it could only earn $163.7 million globally. However, it is now considered a cult classic and is popular in pop culture.
If Kosinski manages to bring Austin and Michael on board, it would mark one of the most exciting casting pairings in recent memory.
