Josh Brolin will lead the cast of Mister.
The Weapons actor will take the lead role in the upcoming action-comedy, which will mark the directorial debut of ‘Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning’ and ‘Jumanji: The Next Level’ second unit and action director Wade Eastwood.
The film follows a man who wakes up covered in blood in a strange house and figures out his true identity when he has to fight off contract killers from his past – including his best friend and former partners – before teaming up with his estranged daughter in a bid to get out.
Wade said in a statement: “Having the opportunity to collaborate with Josh is everything I could have hoped for.
“His presence and gravitas define Mister and bring the film to life in every way. What excites me most about this project is the depth of the characters and complexity of their relationships, which allows me to build action around story, without ever losing the intensity the genre demands.”
Principal photography will begin in Spain early next year, with additional casting currently underway.
Josh will also serve as producer through his own Brolin Productions, as will Thunder Road’s Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee, Nicki Cortese – who wrote the script with Nick Inglis – and Wayne Marc Godfrey for Bright White Light.
The 57-year-old actor was most recently seen in Zach Cregger’s Weapons and he previously praised the horror movie for offering something fresh away from the “boring” output on streaming platforms.
Speaking with Collider, he said: “You’re looking for great filmmakers, and you’re hoping that there’s another new good filmmaker out there.
“Right now, with so much content, you’re just watching things on whatever streaming service you’re on, and you’re just going, ‘F***, why is this so boring, man? Why?’ And just go to the next thing. It’s all the same s***.
“And then somebody not only takes the horror genre, but then f**** with it and then does something on the edge of absurdity, and it’s sort of humorous, so it’s keeping you off-[balance] enough for him to have an emotional impact.”
The Avengers: Endgame star added he “really liked” Cregger’s 2022 horror movie Barbarian, though couldn’t quite understand why he enjoyed the film until he spoke with his daughter and his son-in-law to get a younger perspective on the director’s work.
He explained: “You talk to that era of people, and, I mean, he’s like a god to them. And I’m like, ‘Okay, so they’re reacting to something that I may not understand.’
“I would rather not understand it and do business with that guy and understand it better later. And I think that Weapons is a much more refined version of something that he had his finger on the pulse of with Barbarian.”
