The stars break down the complicated love triangle that unfolds for Quinn after her time in New York City and reveal why they were “ready” for that big finale moment
Ransom Canyon season 2 is now streaming on Netflix
The slow burn had been slow enough for Josh Duhamel and Minka Kelly in Ransom Canyon season 2.
The actors play first loves who constantly find themselves torn apart in the Netflix romance series, which returned for season 2 on Thursday, July 23.
Season 1 ended with the fate of Quinn (Kelly) and Staten (Duhamel) unclear after weeks of tension, and the new installment picks up six months later as Quinn returns to the small Texas town after a stint in New York City.
She doesn’t return alone. Oliver (Ben Robson), whom she met and worked with at the New York Philharmonic during her time away, followed her back to Texas and proposed, leaving Quinn torn between her first love and her new life all season long.
“This wasn’t meant to be a triangle,” Kelly, 46, tells PEOPLE. “She really wanted to move on. She was very frustrated at the end of season 1, and so she went to New York to fulfill her purpose and her dream to play with the New York Phil, and she’s living in New York and having a good time. She meets someone else and it’s easy to romanticize this new shiny thing.”

Returning to Ransom to find “this very new, charming, funny, silly version of Staten, who’s telling her everything she’s ever wanted to hear” leaves Quinn confused, Kelly says.
“This other guy’s perfect in every way. He’s saying and doing all the things she’s ever wanted — but from someone else.”
“So then, when Staten’s making her laugh again, Quinn and all of us watching are realizing, ‘Oh, this is why she loves him so much. This is why they’re supposed to be together. Look how much he makes her laugh.’ You really forget how important that is in a relationship,” Kelly continues. “I think it’s everything: Do you make each other laugh?”
It isn’t until the final episode of the season that Quinn and Staten finally decide to give their relationship another try — with the help of Quinn’s mom, Claire (Patricia Clarkson).
“We were really ready,” Duhamel, 53, tells PEOPLE of the characters’ long-held tension finally giving out. “The audience probably is [too]. It’s like, ‘Okay, can we do this thing already?’ Because there had been a will-they-won’t-they for so long.”
There had been “legitimate reasons” keeping Quinn and Staten apart, he points out, “but like the audience, we’re right along with them.”

“We’re playing this thing as we go, too, and so it did feel like it was the right time to make it happen,” he says of the finale.
It was an added bonus that they filmed the long-awaited scene on a set he says he “won’t forget” anytime soon. “That set that we were on, at that cabin out along this little creek, it was just a beautiful set. It’s one of those sets that just sticks in your mind.”
