I have a few theories on why the Jackass guys, who were going viral before going viral was a thing, have maintained popularity.
First off, it’s the way they executed their work. They hurt themselves (and each other) with consent, which is very different from how streamers and YouTubers operate today. A lot of streamers seem intent on embarrassing people through pranks. Second, you always got the feeling that even if the Jackass guys were not famous, they’d be doing the same stuff in their backyard with a camcorder. There was no clout chasing. Third, it’s a kind of indescribable authenticity because there is no way Johnny Knoxville is faking his discontent about not being able to play with bulls.
