A pair of Oscar winners have just reunited to promote a groundbreaking international film.
Sean Penn and Julia Roberts — who led the acclaimed Showtime series Gaslit — hosted a screening of Marianna Brennand’s debut film Manas alongside John Ross and Nancy Ross this weekend in Los Angeles, Variety reports.
The acclaimed drama film is vying to be the Oscar contender for Brazil and was introduced by Julia, 57, and Penn, 65 — who serves as an executive producer — on Saturday, September 14. The screening was followed by a Q&A with Brennand and its star, Dira Paes.
“I am so excited for what’s about to happen to everyone in this room because it happened to me and it will change you,” Julia told the audience, as Variety noted. “This movie is life-affirming in such a sad and beautiful and magical way.”
“At the Cannes Film Festival this year, there was a Kering Foundation dinner, and a woman came up to the stage to accept the Emerging Talent Award.” Penn said at the Saturday screening, reflecting on the first time he encountered Brennand. “She gave a speech, and the authenticity of this person was the kind of power that could only make a great film.”
Julia made headlines earlier this month when she created a fun red-carpet moment with her niece, fellow actress Emma Roberts, at the Simon Porte Jacquemus and Veuve Clicquot party launching an immersive public experience in Central Park as part of New York Fashion Week. In a video posted to Instagram by Vogue, the two redheads were practically twins in their chic black ensembles and matching red hair.
Meanwhile, fans of Penn will see him on the big screen in Paul Thomas Anderson‘s new film One Battle After Another, which hits theaters September 26. Steven Spielberg has already sung praises for the Leonardo DiCaprio starrer, saying, “It is really incredible.”
