Congratulations are in order for Julie Andrews, who was named the winner of outstanding character voice-over performance at the 76th Creative Arts Emmy Awards. The ceremony was held last weekend on September 6, ahead of the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards next Sunday, September 14, in Los Angeles. Presenter Craig Robinson accepted the award on her behalf as Andrews was not in attendance. Other nominees in the category included Hank Azaria (The Simpsons), Maya Rudolph (Big Mouth), Alan Tudyk (Andor), Jeffrey Wright (What If…?), and Steven Yeun (Invincible).
Never seen on camera, Andrews voices Lady Whistledown, the notorious author of a gossip sheet that drives much of the Regency era show’s drama. Andrews won for her performance in the season three finale of Bridgerton, episode eight, titled “Into the Light.” The biggest reveal of the season is that Nicola Coughlan (who plays Penelope) tells the Ton that she is the real Lady Whistledown.
When Coughlan found out Andrews was voicing Lady Whistledown, she cried. “I’m like, ‘Maybe she knows who I am. Maybe she’s seen a picture of me. Maybe she’s watched,’” she told T&C. “And it’s dumb because she’s the voice on the show. So she knows who’s in it. But I don’t know. It’s Julie Andrews! It’s a bit overwhelming.”
Andrews has received a total of 12 Emmy nominations and 3 wins across both Primetime and Daytime categories. She first won an Emmy in 1958 for Cinderella, and again in 1973 for The Julie Andrews Hour and in 2005 as part of the producing team for Broadway: The American Musical.
Andrews has been nominated for her work on Bridgerton as Lady Whistledown in 2021, 2022, and 2023. But even as a core member of the show, she has never met the rest of the cast. “Shonda Rhimes and the whole gang…They’re terrific. It’s a joy and I’m thrilled that they asked me. But I’ve never met the company in person,” Andrews said on the Today show in 2022. “Of course, I see them on the show sometimes. But I do all my own recording far, far away from them.”
