Transmitted to humans through infected tick bites, Lyme disease triggers fatigue, body aches and energy depletion, symptoms that can persist for years. The Mirror has previously shed light on the struggles faced by those diagnosed with Lyme disease, reports the Mirror.
Lorraine Damonte, who was fighting the debilitating condition, faced the heartbreaking ordeal of hearing her children cry out “I don’t want to die, I don’t want to be like you” after they too became infected. Justin has largely kept details of his health journey under wraps since revealing his diagnosis.
The father of two did acknowledge at the time that the condition took a serious toll on him “mentally and physically”. He explained: “I’ve been battling some health issues, and was diagnosed with Lyme disease – which I don’t say so you feel bad for me – but to shed some light on what I’ve been up against behind the scenes. If you’ve experienced this disease or know someone who has – then you’re aware: living with this can be relentlessly debilitating, both mentally and physically.”
During the tour, the artist dealt with nerve pain, exhaustion and illness, which reportedly went undiagnosed as Lyme disease until he consulted with doctors. The NHS website identifies additional symptoms including a high temperature, or experiencing chills and fever.
In spite of these obstacles, Justin pushed forward with his tour and saw it through to the end, wrapping up with his final performance on July 30 in Istanbul, Turkey. According to a source speaking with PEOPLE, Justin leaned heavily on the support of his wife Jessica Biel, whom he wed in 2012.
The couple share two sons; 10 year old Silas and Phineas, five. Discussing their relationship, another insider noted in October: “Even when life is down, they’re very committed to their marriage. They are happy and united.”
