Justin Trudeau’s ex-wife, Sophie Grégoire Trudeau, appeared to enter the chat after photos of the former prime minister of Canada and Katy Perry getting cozy on a yacht surfaced online.
“The people, the places [and] even the moments that once felt infinite — time asks us to not cling to them and yet we do,” Sophie, 50, said in an Instagram video shared on Monday, October 13. “I do, because to hold on feels safer than to let go.”
“But love was never about possession,” she continued. “It was always about presence.”
Sophie added more in her caption, writing, “Nothing we love is meant to be kept forever. People, places, moments — they’re all meant to be lived, not possessed. The beauty is in the being there: in the shared laugh, the quiet glance, the heartbeat of a place before it changes.”
The mom of three ended her message by saying, “Let yourself love what’s here, without trying to make it stay.”
Fans were divided in the comments, with one criticizing Sophie by writing, “Not you releasing this after your ex was seen with Katy Perry. You left him. Didn’t you let go a long time ago?”
However, others had the former television host’s back by sharing supporting comments, telling her she was an “inspiration” and complimenting the “beautiful message.”

Sophie and Justin, 53, first married in 2005 and over the next several years, they welcomed son Xavier, 17, daughter Ella-Grace, 16, and son Hadrien, 11. However, after 18 years of marriage, the former couple announced their separation in August 2023.
Earlier this summer, Justin and Perry, 40, were spotted dining together in Montreal, and the pair have been seen together several times since, sparking rumors of a budding romance.
On October 11, photos shared by the Daily Mail showed the pair enjoying PDA during a day on the water.
