Kaia Gerber is making her way on the runway and on the screen, with upcoming projects such as the Ryan Murphy-led TV adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis’s The Shards, and the film Mother Mary. It’s not a surprising career path for the 24-year-old, who grew up with Cindy Crawford as her mother.
While Crawford is most known for her legendary modeling career, she also dipped into acting, appearing in the 1995 action-thriller Fair Game, the 1998 drama 54, and the 2001 comedy The Simian Line. Now, her only daughter is following in the same fashion-to-film arc.
In her new Harper’s Bazaar cover story, Gerber says that being surrounded by her mom’s success had a positive effect on her—even when signs of that success included seeing nude images of her mother lining the walls of her family home.
“They were, to me, artistic,” Gerber says of the photos. “It wasn’t vulgar; it wasn’t objectification.” In fact, Gerber says it was “a gift to grow up in a house that was without shame for the female body.”
Gerber began seriously modeling when she was just 15, at which point she switched from attending public school to being homeschooled in order to accommodate her modeling schedule.
While it’s undeniable that Crawford’s influence, connections, and famous bone structure—which she passed on to her daughter—were all factors that helped Gerber enter and succeed in the modeling world, Gerber notes that she’s long been independent, and her mom “doesn’t give out advice unless you ask.”
“But if you ask, get ready, because she’ll be very honest in ways that, sometimes, it’s hard to hear,” Gerber continues. “She’s usually right, which is infuriating, but she’s also very willing to let me make a mistake that she made 30 years ago.”
