Kansas City leaders unveiled a new downtown ballpark Thursday, introducing an ordinance that frames a $1.9 billion stadium for the Kansas City Royals, according to KSHB.
The plan is centered around Washington Square Park, placing the stadium in a key downtown location near the Crown Center.
The ordinance does not finalize the project, but establishes the framework for “city officials to work with the Kansas City Royals on a series of agreements to build the stadium.” According to the ordinance, Kansas City would contribute up to $600 million to the project through bonds and other financing sources.
Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas says no new taxes will be implemented and anticipates Missouri will fund up to 50% of stadium costs through the Show-Me Sports Investment Act.
The plan includes the stadium to open by Opening Day of 2030, just one year before the Royals’ lease expires at Kauffman Stadium.
Beyond baseball, the development is being framed as a broader economic driver for downtown Kansas City. According to KSHB, Lucas stated, “The project … will deliver tens of thousands of guests to Downtown Kansas City 81 additional nights per year, and will have more than 300 days per year of year-round engagement, tourist activity, and conference, concert, and special event activation.”
Still, the proposal remains in its early stages.
