The Kansas City Royals will be the road team in this Spring Breakout spring training game against the Texas Rangers at Surprise Stadium on Thursday afternoon in Surprise, Arizona. According to MLB.com, “[This event] showcases baseball’s future stars as clubs assemble their top prospects to play in exhibition games against one another. The event spans four days and 16 games with exciting prospects facing off in Grapefruit and Cactus League ballparks. In 2025, 68 of MLB Pipeline’s Top 100 prospects – including Toronto’s Trey Yesavage and Rookie of the Year finalists Roman Anthony, Nick Kurtz, and Cade Horton – dotted the rosters.”

The MLB has already seen the Royals’ top prospect, catcher Cater Jensen. However, the other four that round out the team’s top five are all in A+ ball or lower. Blake Mitchell, the team’s No. 2 prospect, is in Single-A+, while Kendry Chourio and David Shields are in only Single-A. KC’s No. 5 prospect Sean Gamble is in rookie ball.
Throughout the 2025 season, Jensen batted .300 with three home runs and 13 RBIs, including a .941 OPS in 60 at-bats. Mitchell has taken the plate nine times in spring training this season with one home run and one RBI.
On the other side, Sebastian Walcott is the team’s top prospect and is the only prospect for the Rangers in their top five that isn’t a pitcher. Outside of Walcott, Cade Scarborough, AJ Russell, Jose Corniell, and Winston Santos round out the top five, all right-handed pitchers.
Both Corniell and Santos are in AA, while Russell, the former Volunteer, players rookie ball. Scarborough is in an A+ league. Corniell has pitched one inning in spring training for Texas, walking one batter, allowing zero hits, and striking out zero.
