After seven innings of marvelous work, left-handed reliever Matt Strahm came in to set up closer Lucas Erceg in the ninth inning. The first batter he faced, Spencer Steer, lined a home run over the right-field fence for the Reds’ second run and second hit of the game. Steer is hitting .327 against left-handed pitchers this season with three home runs. It may have been worth it for Royals manager Matt Quatraro to go with a right-hander against the only productive hitter the Reds had until that point, but the team’s collective struggles against the left-handed Cameron likely led to Strahm’s entry.
