Katie Couric has posted a throwback photo from her 1989 wedding to her late husband Jay Monahan.
The longtime journalist, 68, reflected on how the image resurfaced on her phone and used it to remind followers to stay close to those who matter most to them.
“We had no idea that day he would be diagnosed with metastatic colon cancer just 8 years later,” Couric, who slammed President Trump earlier this year, wrote in the heartfelt Instagram caption.
“It made me think that we never really know what lies ahead and it was a reminder to appreciate every day and cherish those you love.”
Monahan, an attorney, died in 1998 at age 42.
Couric, who later remarried in 2014, said her current husband, John Molner, understood her desire to keep Monahan’s memory alive.
“When I showed Molner the photo he said, ‘Oh…that’s so nice.’ He never feels threatened by Jay’s memory and understands a heart has space for two people,” she wrote.
Couric ended her post with a lighthearted moment, joking about her hairstyle in the photo.
“Nice poof lol,” she wrote.
She also encouraged followers to take action, stating, “Tell the people who matter to you that you love them. Maybe even call your mother if you can.”

One commenter wrote, “Although we have different political views… I’ve ALWAYS loved you. We had kids at the exact same time and I would watch you all the time!!!… May Jay always rest in peace. You keep his memory alive beautifully.”
Another user, who lost her daughter to colon cancer, said the post struck a chord.
“My daughter passed away from colon cancer last year; she was married 5 years. I can’t say enough about how he cared for her until the end. I remember your journey well.”
A different commenter reflected on the sudden death of her husband in 2016.
“My darling soulmate left to ride one of his motorcycles, as he did most days, in 2016. The next time I saw him was in the ER. He never regained consciousness and passed about a week later… I have rebuilt my life solo and am in good health (breast cancer survivor since 2024). Tomorrow is a dream but today is THE day.”
Since her husband’s death, Couric has become an outspoken advocate for cancer awareness. In 2000, she underwent a colonoscopy on live television to promote early detection.
