Katy Trail anniversary events feature live music, maintenance work

The Katy Trail is turning 36 and to celebrate this anniversary several events are planned at locations along its 240-mile span.

The anniversary will honor the legacy of Ted and Pat Jones, who in 1990 donated $2.2 million “to secure and transform the abandoned railroad along the Missouri River” into the trail, Missouri State Parks said in a news release announcing the Founder’s Day celebrations.

Events are happening from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. April 25 and all locations will have a party atmosphere, but a couple also will focus on trail preservation. Guests are encouraged to register at [email protected] with their desired site:

  • The Sedalia Trailhead in Sedalia will have live music featuring The Burmashavers;
  • The Boonville Trailhead in Boonville is where The Rowdy Wranglers will provide live music;
  • The North Jefferson Trailhead between Holts Summit and Jefferson City will have Pik’n Lik’n playing some tunes;
  • The Treloar Trailhead in Marthasville is focused on trail maintenance and preservation. Volunteers can participate in a honeysuckle hack and mulching, an open-air tram ride, refreshments and music by Mike Bauermeister and Gloria Attoun;
  • The Dutzow Trailhead in Dutzow is the other location where volunteers can help with trail maintenance, including a honeysuckle hack and painting of trailhead buildings. Refreshments will be available, and live music will be provided by Dusty James and Abalone Pearl.

Guests are encouraged to bring picnic blankets or lawn chairs to enjoy nature and the live music. More information on Missouri state parks and historic sites is available at mostateparks.com. Missouri State Parks is part of the Missouri Department of Natural Resources.
