Kayla Nicole might not be saying much about her ex Travis Kelce‘s engagement to Taylor Swift, but the timing of her latest Instagram post has social media saying plenty.
The sports journalist, who famously dated the Kansas City Chiefs tight end from 2017 to 2022, has been suspected of responding to lyrics from Taylor Swift’s song “Opalite,” off her new album The Life of a Showgirl — which fans believe references Kelce’s dating history.
On Sunday (Oct. 5), The Pre-Game podcast host reposted a throwback clip from America’s Next Top Model season three, where host Tyra Banks asked eventual winner Eva Marcille, “How do you compare yourself to the other girls out there?” Eva confidently responded with, “I don’t compare myself to other girls… I’m no comparison to anyone else.”
Many felt like Kayla’s post was a subtle reminder that she’s not competing with anyone other than herself.

Fans couldn’t help but connect dots between the post and the song. “Got the girls dedicating songs to you chile lol,” wrote one person underneath a recent post of Kayla’s. A Taylor Swift fan also commented, “Swiftie here and so many of us love you! Plz don’t listen to the haters or whatever, you’re killing it in your own game and so many of us respect you a ton. Sending love and kindness.”
In “Opalite,” Taylor reflects on past relationships before finding love with the Super Bowl champ. In the second verse of the track, Taylor sings, “You couldn’t understand it / Why you felt alone / You were in it for real / She was in her phone / You were just a pose…”
From there, fans did their research pulling up an old video of Travis and Kayla sitting at dinner, where he was clearly frustrated with her scrolling on her phone. “Sometimes, if someone would pay me attention,” Kayla says in the resurfaced clip, as Travis tries to grab her phone, “I wouldn’t have to go on social media and seek validation from a bunch of strangers on the internet.”
Travis, visibly annoyed, fired back, “Oh, my God. Get off your phone. You’re not even drinking your wine anymore. Can we go?”

Although Taylor hasn’t directly addressed whether “Opalite’s” lyrics are indeed inspired by Travis’ ex, she did reveal that her NFL boyfriend has a soft spot for the track. “He loves that one,” she told Capital Breakfast. “I have favorite words, favorite phrases, things I’ll put in an endless file of lyrics that I’m constantly going to go and cherry-pick from when I’m writing.”
She added that the song’s title, “Opalite,” holds a personal connection. “I had written down the word ‘opalite’ because I learned that it is actually a man-made opal. Opal can be man-made just like diamonds. Travis’ birthstone is an opal, so I have always fixated on that, and I’ve always loved that stone.”
