Kelly Clarkson’sSeason 7 premiere week is kicking off with a bang, with the second episode featuring an impromptu Kellyoke session with Matthew McConaughey that left viewers stunned.
The moment came during the Tuesday, Sept. 30 broadcast, while the pair chatted about his poetry book, Poems & Prayers, and the version of a book tour he put together for it. Instead of traveling around from Barnes and Noble to Barnes and Noble, he invited other musicians to theaters to perform with him. Jon Bon Jovi joined the actor in Brooklyn, while Lukas Nelson joined him in Nashville, for example, where McConaughey recited his poetry while the musicians scored his words, making some songs out of it during the “magical experience.”
It worked well for the actor-turned-writer, as he tends to write with music, or a metered beat, in his head (whereas Clarkson sees imagery in her head when she’s writing). “You know that little chorus in ZZ Top’s ‘Just Got Paid Today’?” he asked, singing the words as he plucked an air guitar before switching to a series of “dun dun duns.”
“That meter,” he explained, “all of a sudden lyrics, couplet, started fitting into it.” He recorded it and parsed it down into what would become his poem, “Changing Lanes.”
“You want to play with one?” he invited, and Clarkson’s band was quick on the uptake as the two transitioned over to the Kellyoke stage. While McConaughey spoke-sang the words, Clarkson clapped her hands to the beat, offering backing vocals that wove in between his lines.
Fans were shocked by the unexpected moment, with one writing in the comments, “That duet came out of nowhere like WHAT OMGGG 😂😂 😭.”
“Omg!” another gasped in response. “That was absolutely INCREDIBLE 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏❤️.”
“The duet we didn’t know we need,” another fawned, going on to exclaim, “THAT WOMAN IS THE BEST VOCALIST ON THIS PLANET.”
As is the common consensus surrounding just about every cover she belts out, fans say they could “listen to Kelly sing those yeah yeahs all day long,” with one calling particular attention to her “effortlessness.”
“Kelly’s effortlessness on those casual high notes is insane ❤,” they declared, while another called it a “hell yeah moment ✌💥.”
“Keep surprising us, momma! 🧎🏼♀️🔥,” a final fan requested.
