A former Survivor star has revealed a devastating cancer diagnosis after ignoring a string of worrying symptoms.
Ken McNickle, who won over fans during his run to the finale of Survivor’s 33rd season, shared the heartbreaking news in an emotional social media post this week.
The 43-year-old said he had debated whether to go public with his diagnosis but ultimately decided to share his experience in the hope it could help others.
“I’ve made some mistakes in the process and should have taken care of myself better and sooner. But here we are,” McNickle wrote.
While he did not reveal the type of cancer he is battling, McNickle admitted he wished he had sought medical advice earlier instead of brushing off warning signs.
Photos shared alongside the announcement showed the reality TV favourite undergoing treatment, including images taken during hospital visits with medical patches attached to his chest.
Despite the diagnosis, the father-of-two said he was determined to stay positive and lean on the support of his family.
“There’s always a choice,” he wrote.
“And I’m choosing optimism, health, happiness and love.”
The reality star also spoke candidly about the emotional toll of the diagnosis, admitting there are times when the fight feels overwhelming.
He finished with a powerful message urging others not to ignore potential health concerns.
“If you have a health concern, don’t sit on it. Get yourself checked. There’s no valid reason not to. Not one.”
These days, McNickle describes himself as a “Life Coach for the Heart Healing” on Instagram, but many fans will remember him from Survivor: Millennials vs Gen X in 2016.
The then 33-year-old emerged as one of season 33’s standout contestants, making it all the way to the finale before narrowly missing out on the title.
In a candid video posted online, despite not stating what cancer he has been diagnosed with, the former Survivor contestant said he ignored several warning signs for months, including one issue that became so severe it left a large wound in his chest.
“I waited almost a year until my skin was tearing open to get this checked,” he said.
According to McNickle, doctors told him the problem could have been far easier to treat had he sought help sooner.
He also explained he experienced blood in his stool for months and delayed having a growing lump checked by a medical professional.
The reality TV personality said his reluctance to seek treatment was partly shaped by attitudes towards toughness and masculinity he had grown up with.
Recalling the messages he heard as a child, McNickle said he was repeatedly told to hide pain and “just be a man.”
Now facing cancer, he hopes his experience serves as a wake-up call for others to take unusual symptoms seriously and get checked as early as possible.
