Country music star Kenny Chesney made a subtle dig at ex-wife Renee Zellweger in his new tell-all memoir, 20 years after their short marriage.
The 57-year-old singer gets candid about his romantic life in his new tell-all memoir, Heart Life Music, which was released on Tuesday, Nov. 4.
He even opens up about why he could never settle down, despite his numerous high-profile relationships, especially his brief one with the 56-year-old Hollywood star.
“I had a couple of relationships, but they always fell apart,” the She’s Got It All singer wrote, according to The US Sun. “Any girlfriend, no matter how much I cared, was going to finish third or fourth, maybe even fifth.”
He continued, “First, there was how music consumed me. Second, there was songwriting, followed by the fans, my career, and what that required.
“Then, there was my team, the people who’d thrown their dreams in with mine, as well as my island family.”
Chesney continued, “Always gone, always leaving. People say it’s a sacrifice, but if all you want is to make music that gives people the soundtrack for their life, how can that be anything but a blessing?”
The singer, a recent inductee into the Country Music Hall of Fame, appeared to hint at the reason his and Zellweger’s whirlwind romance didn’t last 20 years ago. The Express US has contacted Zellweger’s team for comment.
The former couple met in January 2005 at a telethon, but Chesney had admitted to having a crush on the actress long before that.
In a 2002 interview with The Tennessean, Chesney revealed Zellweger was one of his top celebrity crushes. He also confessed that he believed she could easily “fit into” his lifestyle.

“Here’s a country girl who’s still down to earth. You never see her coming, then — wham! — there she is. And that makes her really, really sexy,” he told the outlet. “Plus, she seems like the kind of girl who could fit in and be at home anywhere.”
His 1999 hit You Had Me From Hello was also rumored to be inspired by a similar line that Zellweger’s character says in the 1996 film, Jerry Maguire.
They married in May 2005 at Chesney’s private estate in St. John, U.S Virgin Islands.
However, their marriage was short-lived, as they divorced later that September. Their marriage was annulled, and Zellweger cited “fraud” as the reason, which had many fans scratching their heads.
Zellweger later released a statement explaining the move, saying that the term was “simply legal language and not a reflection of Kenny’s character.”
Chesney responded by urging fans to respect their “privacy” during a “sad time,” and the pair went on to get along better.
Chesney even gushed about their relationship during an interview on The View, saying, “She and I fell in love like a couple of schoolkids.”
He added, “I’m glad to know that can happen, that that exists, and we still really care about each other. It would’ve been a bad thing if I hadn’t met her.
“She’s wonderful. I don’t want to sit here and go, ‘Poor me.’ I am totally blessed, and I’m grateful for it.”
Zellweger has since moved on with Christina Haack’s ex-husband, Ant Anstead, while Chesney has been in a long-term relationship with model and dancer, Mary Nolan, since 2012.
However, the singer revealed in his memoir that he and Nolan are no longer dating.
