Kim Kardashian once issued a stark warning to then-husband Kanye West.
In the new documentary, “In Whose Mind?,” out now, featuring never-before-seen footage of the “Gold Digger” rapper over the course of six years, he and Kardashian had a tense confrontation over it in 2018. The two had a tense phone call in which they discussed how he is perceived by the people in his life.
“I can’t sleep. I’ve been crying all day,” Kardashian told West during the 2018 conversation, according to People. “It’s just this bad dream that’s not ending.”
However, West — who has in recent years stirred controversy over social media posts and politics — seemed to brush off Kardashian’s concern. “I don’t care about the music business,” he responded. “I don’t care about the work field. I’m in a slave business.”
“The Kardashians” star then went on to caution her then-husband against that mentality, telling him, to which the SKIMS founder replied, “Just ’cause you have a job and you work hard doesn’t mean you’re a slave.”
And in a clip from the Nicolas Ballesteros documentary viewed by E! News, Kardashian emphasized that she is “not about burning bridges with companies,” adding, “You’re gonna wake up one day and you’re gonna have, like, nothing.”

It was that remark that led West to lash out at his wife, with whom he broke up in 2021, “No! Never tell me I’m gonna wake up one day and have nothing. Never put that into the universe.”
E! News has reached out to Kardashian’s reps for comment and has not heard back.
The fiery phone call between Kardashian and West — who share North West, 12, Saint West, 9, Chicago West, 7, and Psalm West, 6 — is one of many strained exchanges between the two over his behavior.
In a separate moment in the documentary, Kardashian’s mom Kris Jenner has her own difficult conversation with West about his mental health, during which the “Mercy” artist, who was diagnosed with bipolar disorder in 2016, proclaimed, per People, he “would rather be dead than to be on medication.”
And during the 2018 back and forth, where they discussed his past hospitalization for mental health, Jenner emphasized the Kardashian-Jenners’ attempt to be part of his support system.
“I don’t want you to be not perfect,” she told him. “I love you, and I want my daughter to love you the way you want her to love you.”
Ultimately, Kardashian and West finalized their divorce in 2022 after eight years of marriage.
